Description
The original lighthouse in Santa Cruz, California was the twelfth to be built in the 1800's on the California coast. It has been replaced and moved due to sea conditions over the years that affected its original location.
The lighthouse as it stands today, officially known as the Mark Abbott Lighthouse, owes its existence to Chuck and Esther Abbott, nationally known photographers who sponsored the building of the modern lighthouse in memory of their son Mark, killed in a surfing accident.
The lighthouse, now inactive, is home to California's first surfing museum and is the location each Christmas for "Caroling Under the Stars," a Santa Cruz tradition which attracts hundreds of locals and visitors alike.
