Description
Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish is one of the most iconic structures in the entire city of Puerto Vallarta. It is located in the central part of the city and is a focal point of numerous religious and civic activities.
On any given day, the church is open and active with tours and parishioners coming and going. It has a long and colorful history dating back to 1903 when construction began for a church on this site. With many modifications and construction stoppages along the way, various sections of the church have a variety of completion dates.
The original concrete crown on the main towers was completed in 1963, and the side towers were completed as recently as 1987 producing the church as we know it today. Unfortunately, the original concrete crown was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1995 and a temporary fiberglass crown is now in its place. The weight and elements have also destroyed and distorted areas of this crown. A plan is underway for a new and permanent crown for the dome estimated to cost $800,000 USD.
