Description
The Marquette County Courthouse, built in 1902 to 1904 has hosted many historical events.
In 1913, President Theodore Roosevelt won a libel suit against Ishpeming MI newspaper publisher George Newett and was awarded a symbolic six cents, "the price of a good newspaper."
Another case tried here inspired Anatomy of a Murder, a novel by Ishpeming resident, John Voelker, writing as Robert Traver. In 1959, the courthouse was the setting of the motion picture based on the novel, directed by Otto Preminger and musical score by Duke Ellington. The movie starred Jimmy Stewart, Ben Gazzara, Lee Remick, George C. Scott, Kathryn Grant, Eve Arden, Joseph Welch and Orson Bean.
In 1978, the courthouse was added to the list of National Register of Historic Places
