Description
Curly’s Cabin was built for the 1991 movie, “City Slickers, starring Billy Crystal, Jack Palance, Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby.
Ghost Ranch was made famous by popular American artist, Georgia O’Keeffe, who spent winters in New York City and her summers at the Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, from 1934 until 1949.
During that time, she entertained other famous artists and photographers. Among guests to visit her at the ranch over the years were Charles and Anne Lindbergh, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, poet Allen Ginsberg, and photographer Ansel Adams.
After the death of her husband in New York City, in 1946, Georgia spent time winding up her affairs and permanently moved to New Mexico in 1949. She bought a year-round house in nearby Abiquiu, but continued to spend time at Ghost Ranch until she reached the age of 96, in 1984.
Although she never owned the entire ranch, she was able to buy a house and several acres within its confines. After she became frail, she eventually moved from Abiquiu to Santa Fe where she died in her 99th year.
Cerro Pedernal, locally known as simply "Pedernal", the flat-topped mountain to the south, was probably her favorite subject. “It’s my private mountain,” she said. “God told me if I painted it often enough I could have it.” In accordance with her wishes, her body was cremated and her ashes were scattered to the wind at the top of Pedernal Mountain, over her beloved mountain.
