Description
The three shafts of the inactive Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, Cliffs Shaft Mine overlook the City of Ishpeming, Michigan in the heart of the Upper Michigan, Marquette Iron Range.
While the iron mining heyday has passed, these iconic towers remain as a landmark to the historic past of this wonderful city where I spent my childhood.
The two identical obelisk shaped headframes, A and B, were built in 1919 over the original deteriorating wooden shafts sunk in 1879. A third shaft, and more modern headframe, were built in the center of the two original shafts in 1955.
One of the main employers in the area, the mine was at one time the nation's largest producer of hematite, and shipped the iron ore every year but one from 1887 until its eventual close. Mining at this site continued until 1967, marking the end of underground iron mining in the area.
